Pressure-Balanced Oil-Filled molding for cable terminiations
When operating pressure exceeds 2,000 psig and number of pressure cycles exceeds 10, Teledyne D.G.O’Brien recommends use of PBOF terminations.
Teledyne D.G.O’Brien PBOF Assemblies typically use sealed connectors on both ends; tubing is used to join the connectors (e.g. polyurethane tubing or specially-qualified hydraulic hose); hose is filled with oil (e.g. Hydraulic Oil, Kerosene, DC-100)
Advantages
- Assembly is completely pressure-balanced; eliminates conductor failures due to hockling; virtually unlimited cycle life
- Very flexible wiring configurations using standard off-the-shelf components for internal wiring; no special cable purchases, therefore few sourcing restrictions/delivery issues.
- Highly reliable: Typically incorporate redundant sealing to wires; operates even if oil is replaced by seawater
- Field repairable with simple tools.
- Does not require any special processes; mechanical assembly with tooling for venting and filling.
Risks
- Limited cable lengths (<200 ft max typically)
- Environmental concern for leakage of oil if cable jacket is breached (use biodegradable oils)
- Compared to standard cables; cost/ft may be higher due to increased labor content in building and filling the cable.
- May be bulkier than molded cables when comparing similar conductor counts.
